Lettering basics
Add bubbles, captions and sound effects
In Studio, open BUBBLES, CAPTIONS or SOUNDS on the left rail and choose one: with a panel selected it goes into that panel, otherwise it lands in the middle of the page. Bubbles are grouped by what the character is doing, and “All 48 bubble styles” lists every preset, built from ten bubble bodies (Dialogue, Soft, Thought, Shout, Whisper, Digital, Radio, Alarm, Dream and Broadcast) and eight tail types (Aside, Speech, Story, Inner voice, Electric, Chorus, Pointer and No tail). To change a bubble later, select it and pick another shape or tail under SHAPE in the inspector; its words, speaker and position stay. With Advanced mode on (Settings › Preferences, or the “Advanced” switch at the top of Studio), you can also pick any preset from “Object preset” on the canvas toolbar and press “Add”.
Tails and speakers
Drag the blue dot at the tip to aim a tail anywhere. To connect a bubble to a character, choose them under “Who’s speaking” in the inspector; the list shows the project’s approved and locked characters. Then choose “Point the tail at …” and click the character’s head, or press Esc to cancel. Once the tip is anchored, moving the bubble keeps the tail pointing at that spot; with Advanced mode on, “Release anchor” frees it. Linking a speaker doesn’t aim the tail for you. Bubbles that are locked or have no tail show no dot; to add a tail, pick one under SHAPE.
Fitting text in the box
The LETTERING section of the inspector sets the font and size. With Advanced mode on it is called TEXT STYLE and adds line height, letter spacing, alignment, direction, writing mode, a minimum size and “Auto-fit text”. Auto-fit is on by default: text that doesn’t fit shrinks step by step until it fits or reaches the minimum. If it still overflows, you’ll see “Text overflows its box. Resize it or reduce the minimum font size.” Overflowing text isn’t clipped, but it blocks export, and the export checks link straight to “Fix in Studio”. Resizing a box re-wraps its text. Lines break at spaces and keep your own line breaks; very long words and CJK text break between characters.
Fonts
Ten fonts are available: Inter, Anton, Zen Kaku Gothic New, Comic Neue, Bangers, Oswald, Noto Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans Arabic and Noto Sans Hebrew. Each text object uses exactly one font, with no automatic fallback, so pick a font that covers your language. Characters the font doesn’t include block the export until you change the font or the text.
Captions and sound effects
Captions are text boxes without a tail or speaker. There are 12 caption presets, including Classic, Narration, Location and Time, and captions share the bubble text controls. Editable SFX come in 15 presets, from Impact and Speed to Magic and Alarm; you can change their text, font and size, plus their line height with Advanced mode on. Decorative SFX are fixed pieces of artwork whose words can’t be edited.
Pages built from a story plan arrive already lettered, with dialogue bubbles and Classic or Narration captions. Their tails start below the bubble rather than at the speaker, so aim them before you export.
Vertical and right-to-left text
New words follow the language you pick for the comic: right to left for Arabic and Hebrew, and vertical columns for Japanese on a manga page. With Advanced mode on, bubbles and captions also have a “Writing” mode of Horizontal, Vertical RTL or Vertical LTR, and a “Direction” of LTR or RTL; right-to-left text is right-aligned by default. Vertical writing is basic: one character per cell, with a new column at each line break or when a column is full. Japanese line-breaking rules, furigana and tate-chu-yoko aren’t supported yet. For a right-to-left comic, choose “Right to left” under “Reading direction” when you create it, or set “Reading” in the page settings with Advanced mode on; the export then pre-selects its right-to-left option, but pages you have already laid out aren’t mirrored.
Editing after the art is drawn
Lettering sits above the artwork, so changing words or moving bubbles costs no credits. Double-click text on the canvas to edit it (Enter saves, Shift+Enter adds a line, Esc cancels), or use the WORDS box in the inspector, where “Magic write” can rewrite, shorten or translate a bubble or caption. With nothing selected, WORDS ON THIS PAGE in the inspector lists every piece of text on the page; with Advanced mode on, WORDS on the rail opens the same list. Each change saves automatically and Studio shows “Saved”, with the revision number (“Saved · rev N”) when Advanced mode is on. Exports are raster images that keep your line breaks and fonts.
On a phone or tablet, tap a bubble or caption to change its words, speaker or shape, and add bubbles, captions and sounds to a tapped panel; moving, resizing and aiming tails need a bigger screen. On flat AI-rendered beta pages the words are part of the image, and “Create editable version” rebuilds the page with editable lettering for the credits shown on the button.
